Company Overview
Smith Alarm is a leading provider of alarm monitoring services to businesses and private residences in the Dallas, TX area. The company installs and maintains the alarm equipment at a commercial site or residence and then charges a monthly fee for monitoring the property.

TA’s Role
TA backed David Dodson in his purchase of Smith Alarm in early 1990. Prior to purchasing the company, Mr. Dodson worked for American Security, McKinsey and Dole. David focused on this industry as a consolidation opportunity and worked with TA to purchase Smith and several follow-on acquisitions. Richard Tadler was a Director of Smith Alarm.

Current Situation
Management of Smith Alarm grew revenues from $9.6 million at the time of TA’s investment to $17.2 million in 1993. TA and management sold the company in 1994 to Citicorp Venture Capital concluding a successful three year partnership.
